5 Minutes Card

Sometimes I spend hours on a single card as I enjoy the process. But sometimes you just need a quick card.   This little project was super quick, but is super sweet too.  And it gave me the chance to "make something" in the little time I had.  Fun!

Simple Cereal Box - Kraft Card Tutorial

This tutorial explains how I made this sweet and simple card above:

Materials

Cereal Box

Digital Stamp called "Sheep and Lamb"  HandmadeHarbourDigiStamps  

Red cardstock  5.5 x 2.5"
2 Sheets White Cardstock 8.5 x 11"

Computer/printer to print sentiment

Pens to color (I used Copics)

Sewing Machine 

Lace

Sizzix Nestabilities circle die (optional)

I  love the look I've been seeing with Kraft cardstock and wanted to use that on this card, but since I didn't have any Kraft cardstock and I love upcycling, I used a cereal box instead!  

A cereal box makes fabulous thick Kraft cardstock.  Plus my kids eat an embarrassing amount of cereal....

I trimmed the cereal box to the size below, 5.5 inches x 8.5 inches.

Then I folded it in half which made it a 5.5 inch x 4.25 inch card which is an A-2 size.

I used my little nifty Perfect Squares tool to trim the corners as I am not the best folder.  Not required, but I find it is a neat little tool for straightening cards.

The red card stock I trimmed to 2.25 x 5.5 and glued on the kraft cereal box.  

Fun Part - Time to Sew!

I stitched a square around the border 1/4 inches in from the edge.  I used the fat stitch which is stitch #2 on my sewing machine (Pfaff Quilt Expressions 4.).  It is probably different on your sewing machine, but it is the wide looking simple stitch.  I find that it stands out better on cards.  

I also lengthened the stitch length to 4.5.

Here is a boo-boo.  Originally, the card was going to be just plain stitches all around.  But on the left hand side you can see in the above photo the stitches came out crooked.  That is OK!  I just used this mistake as a design opportunity and added lace, which I think adds some softness to the card and looks great.  

This is the lace I used which I bought for $1.50 at Daimo the Japanese dollar store we have here in Southern California.  Feel free to substitute whatever lace or ribbon you have on hand.

Next, I printed out my Handmade Harbour "sheep and lamb digi image" and colored it with Copic pens.  This digi image was super fun to color.  I fussy cut the image leaving a little white border around the image and glued it to the card.

The sentiment was printed on my computer using Word in the Chalkduster font.  

I then used a die cut (Spellbinders Nestabiltiies 2 inch circle) to cut the sentiment out.  You can use any circle template you have such as a salt shaker or lid.   I lightly colored around the edges of the circle to add depth.

Finally, I added white card stock to the inside to give it a cleaner look.

Beach Bum Bunny

Good Morning!

My baby (ok he's 2 years old, but he will always be a baby to me) insisted on swimming yesterday and I think it put this whole swim/sun/snorkel guy in my mind.  The colors make me happy.

For some inspiration I used this Sketch #70 from Sunday Sketch & Stamp

Bunny was very hard to color because I wanted him white but he's underwater so.....practice practice.  Also I havent colored many animals!  I colored him 4 or 5 times....of course my Dark Blue Copic marker came to a bloody end by dying in a spurt of blue ink on my last copy before this guy.

My Mother made me do it...

I blame my current stamping addiction on my Super Crafty Mom.

She recently sent me these BEAUTIFUL rice papers to card make.  How could I not be inspired?  I used the little dragonfly one to make my Konnichiwa card below.  She said some of this paper is 10 years old!  Im pretty glad she doesn't like to throw away things! :-)

My Copic Storage

My mother is a stamper and has been for probably over 20 years.  She has been there for all the  scrapbooking/stamping world changes and growth.  When I first became interested in stamping in April 2013 (yes 4 months ago!) she was so excited she sent me most of these Copic pens.  I LOVE coloring with Copic pens!  I added a few but Copics are expensive so it was nice to start with a great base of colors.  

I researched a lot of storage options and because I need to carry them out to my craft area on the dining room table and back again, I settled on this black bag from Target.  I love it because I can have my colors separate and its portable and I can stick my scissors and ruler and heat gun in the middle.  It also stands nicely on my table when I stamp.

See?  Very handy little storage for my needs!

Konnichiwa!I

Konnichiwa  means "hello" or "good afternoon" in Japanese.  I had so much fun paper piecing this little stamp from Gorjuss. 

I  used an old newspaper to make the "text" for her book.  I colored her with Copics and used Japanese rice paper with dragonflys for the card background.  The "konnichiwa" stamp is from LaLaLand and I used Nestabilities scallop circle die on the black cardstock.  The silver metal brads are Candis.  

I bought this stamp from MarkerPop.com which is one of my favorite places to buy stamping supplies.  MarkerPop is 1) super fast delivery  - its in my hands in a few days -  and 2) great customer service! Once my cardstock arrived bent so I emailed them and they shipped some new ones out complimentary immediately.
